Japan is a country where the first hour needs data: the train, the IC card, the address in Japanese that the taxi will not guess.
Airalo
sells a Japan eSIM you install before the flight, then switch on after landing. The airport still sells physical SIMs and pocket-wifi devices. Those are a reasonable product if your phone cannot take an eSIM. They are a queue if it can.
eSIM, shop SIM, or a wifi puck
| Travel eSIM | Airport SIM | Pocket wifi | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When you set it up | At home, on wifi | After you land, at a counter | After you land, then you carry a brick |
| Phone requirement | Unlocked, eSIM-capable | A SIM tray and an unlocked phone | Any phone that joins wifi |
| A Japanese phone number | Not on a typical data-only plan | Sometimes, if you buy that product | No |
| Sharing with a laptop | Only if the plan allows a hotspot | Depends on the SIM | The reason people still rent one |
If two of you need laptops online all day, a puck can still be the honest tool. If you need maps, translation, and messages on one unlocked phone, the eSIM is the one that does not involve a deposit or a return desk on the way home.
Before you pay
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and appears on Airalo's device list.
- Read whether validity starts when you connect in Japan or when you install. Most plans wait for the network. Airalo's install timing is the source. Check the package anyway.
- Count gigabytes for the whole trip, not per day. Suica in Apple Wallet, Google Maps, and a few video calls are a different pile from uploading every photograph.
- If you need a hotspot, the plan has to say so.
Install with the steps in the before-you-fly guide. On the ground, select the Japan line for data and turn data roaming on for that line only. Leave your home number in place so WhatsApp and bank texts survive. That split is this dual-SIM setup.
What a Japan data plan is not
It is not a JR Pass, and it is not a guarantee of signal on every rural platform or inside every concrete station. It is not automatically valid in Korea or Taiwan on the way home. A Japan plan is Japan. A region plan is a different purchase. Read the country list the way you read the visa.

Can I keep my number and use the eSIM?
Yes. Data on the eSIM, voice and SMS on the home SIM, data roaming off on the home SIM. A data-only plan will not replace a Japanese number if a hotel form demands one.
